How long does the program take?+
The 500 Hour Master Barber Program can be completed in as little as 4 months, depending on the schedule you choose. The 50 Hour Barber Refresher is a 2-week intensive. The 3 Hour Contagious Diseases program is a single session.
When do new classes start?+
New classes begin the first Monday of every month. This means you don't have to wait long to get started — simply apply, gather your documents, and be ready for the next start date.
What schedules are available?+
We offer three flexible schedules for the 500 Hour program: • Plan A (Morning): Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–2:00 PM • Plan B (Afternoon): Monday–Friday, 2:00 PM–8:00 PM • Plan C (Weekend): Saturday & Sunday, 9:00 AM–7:00 PM
What are the entrance requirements?+
To enroll at ABI you will need: • Social Security Card • High School Diploma, GED, or pass the ATB entrance exam at ABI • Must be at least 17 years of age • Proof of residential address • Valid photo ID or Driver's License • $500 Down Payment (includes $100 registration fee)
How much does the program cost?+
The 500 Hour Master Barber Program starts at $4,600 (Afternoon and Weekend plans). The Morning plan is $5,600. The 50 Hour Refresher is $1,500. Contact us for pricing on the 3 Hour Contagious Diseases program. Payment plans are available for all programs.
Do you offer payment plans?+
Yes! All programs include flexible weekly payment plans after your initial down payment. For example, Plan B (Afternoon) requires $500 down, then 16 weekly payments of $250 plus a final payment of $100. A full breakdown is available on each program page.
What licenses or certifications will I receive?+
Upon completing the 500 Hour Master Barber Program, you will be fully prepared to take the New York State Board of Barbering Exam and obtain your Master Barber License. ABI also prepares you for the written and practical portions of the exam.
Do you offer job placement assistance?+
Yes. Upon completion of your program, you will have the opportunity to meet with our Job Placement Office. Our team helps students explore employment opportunities, connect with employers, and navigate the next steps in their barbering career.

Do you accept GI Bill® or VA benefits?+
Yes! ABI accepts Post-9/11 GI Bill® and VA education benefits. The GI Bill® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Contact us for details on how to apply your benefits.
What is ACCES-VR?+
ACCES-VR (Adult Career and Continuing Education Services – Vocational Rehabilitation) is a New York State program that supports individuals with disabilities in obtaining and maintaining employment. If you qualify, you may receive financial assistance to pursue your barbering career at ABI.
Do I need to buy my own tools?+
Students are responsible for purchasing their own barbering tools, books, and supplies. These can be purchased from ABI directly or from other suppliers. A list of acceptable tools will be provided upon registration.
Is ABI licensed by the state?+
Yes. American Barber Institute is licensed by the New York State Department of Education. We have been in business for over 30 years, serving the New York community.
Can I get a haircut at ABI?+
Yes! The public is welcome to come in for affordable student haircuts — typically around $3. It's a great way to help student trainees reach their required hours while getting a quality cut. Visit our Haircuts page to learn more.
