How long does the program take?
The 500-Hour Master Barber Program takes approximately four months (about 17 weeks) full-time. Full-time students attend 30 hours per week; weekend students attend 18 hours per week over about 27 weeks.
When do new classes start?
New classes begin on the first Monday of every month. Call (212) 290-2289 or request a call to reserve your seat for the next start date.
What schedules are available?
Three options: Morning (Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–2:00 PM), Afternoon (Monday–Friday, 2:00 PM–8:00 PM), and Weekend (Saturday & Sunday, 9:00 AM–7:00 PM).
What are the entrance requirements?
A Social Security card; a High School Diploma or GED (or pass the ATB entrance exam at ABI); you must be at least 17 years of age; proof of residential address; a valid photo ID or driver's license; and a $500 down payment.
How much does the program cost?
The 500-Hour Master Barber Program is $5,600 for the morning schedule and $4,600 for the afternoon or weekend schedules. Students purchase their own tools, books and supplies; a list is provided at registration.
Do you offer payment plans?
Yes — every program includes a weekly payment plan so you can pay while you attend. Morning: $500 down + 17 weekly payments of $300. Afternoon: $500 down + 16 weekly payments of $250 + a final $100. Weekend: $550 down + 27 weekly payments of $150.
What licenses or certifications will I receive?
The program prepares you to take the New York State Board Exam for the Master Barber license. Passing it qualifies you to work as a licensed Master Barber and to own a barbershop and employ barbers or apprentices.
Do you offer job placement assistance?
Yes. Every graduate meets one-on-one with our full-time job placement office, which actively connects graduates with barbershops, spas and salons looking to hire. Placement support is also available to students while enrolled.
Where are your locations?
We have two campuses: Manhattan — 48 West 39th Street, New York, NY 10018; and the Bronx — 121 Westchester Square, Bronx, NY 10461.
Do you accept GI Bill® or VA benefits?
Yes. ABI is VA-approved under Title 38 USC § 3676. Eligible veterans can use the Post-9/11 GI Bill® and VA benefits — see our Veterans page.
What is ACCES-VR?
ACCES-VR is a New York State vocational rehabilitation program. If you qualify, it can cover your tuition, tools and books and pay ABI directly. See our ACCES-VR page for details.
Do I need to buy my own tools?
Yes — students are responsible for purchasing their own barbering tools, books and supplies. A list of acceptable tools is provided upon registration, and tools can be purchased from ABI or another supplier.
Is ABI licensed by the state?
Yes. American Barber Institute is licensed by the New York State Department of Education (NYSED / BPSS). Est. 1996 — changing lives for over 30 years.
